For our Guests with Energy to Spare (and Good Shoes)
Whether you're training for a race or just like the idea of experiencing Iceland on foot, summer is the perfect season. With long daylight hours, crisp air, and breathtaking views, running in Iceland is unlike anywhere else in the world.
Here are some races worth knowing about; whether you want to join in or cheer from the sidelines.

Reykjavík Marathon & Culture Night – A Perfect Pair
Held every August, the Reykjavík Marathon offers distances for every level: full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 3K fun run, and a kids’ race. The course winds through city streets and seafront paths, and the energy is contagious. After the finish line? The city shifts straight into Menningarnótt, an all-day cultural festival with music, food, and fireworks.
Staying with us at Sand Hotel, Borg Hotel, Apótek Hotel or Storm? You’re already in prime position.

Laugavegur Ultra Marathon – Iceland’s Classic Highland Race
One of the most famous trail races in the country, the Laugavegur Ultra stretches 55 km from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk through colorful rhyolite mountains, lava fields, rivers, and glaciers. It’s challenging; but widely considered one of the world’s most beautiful ultramarathons.
Ideal for seasoned runners and those looking to experience Iceland’s interior in an unforgettable way.

Súluhlaup – Run a Mountain in Akureyri
If you're visiting North Iceland and staying at Hotel Kea, you might be lucky enough to catch Súluhlaup; a mountain race up Mt. Súlur. It’s challenging but stunning, offering views over the fjord and a true Icelandic trail-running vibe.
This is where locals run for fun; and you can too.

Ásbyrgi Run – Nature, Myths, and Motion
One of the most unique races in Iceland, the Ásbyrgi run takes place inside a horseshoe-shaped canyon in Vatnajökull National Park. It’s a quiet race through birch forests and along cliffs believed in legend to be the hoofprint of Odin’s eight-legged horse.
Ideal for those heading north to explore more remote areas.

Local Runs, National Views
Throughout July and August, you’ll also find smaller trail races in places like Siglufjörður, Húsavík, and Vík; often tied to local festivals. They’re low-key, scenic, and a fun way to experience Iceland beyond the usual sightseeing.
Whether you're aiming for a medal or just want to jog a few morning kilometers, Iceland offers a landscape made for moving.
