Geothermal Lagoons Near Hótel Grímsborgir
There is no more authentic Icelandic experience than soaking in a geothermal pool after a long day of exploring. Because Hótel Grímsborgir is located in one of the most geothermally active regions of the country, you are just a short drive away from a relaxing soak.
Below are the best places to unwind near the hotel, ranging from historic natural pools to brand-new luxury lagoons.
Laugarvatn Fontana
Distance from Hótel Grímsborgir: 26 km – approx. 25 minutes
Laugarvatn Fontana is built directly over natural steam vents. This means you aren’t just sitting in heated water; you are experiencing the raw power of the earth. The facility has undergone recent renovations (completed in 2026) to expand its relaxation areas.
The steam rooms are the highlight here, you can hear the geothermal water bubbling right beneath the floorboards. For the brave, there is a gate leading directly into Lake Laugarvatn for a refreshing cold-water dip.
Don't Miss: The Geothermal Bakery Tour. Every day, they bury pots of rye bread in the hot black sand by the lake. Watching them dig up a fresh, steaming loaf is a highlight of any Golden Circle trip.

Laugarás Lagoon
Distance from Hótel Grímsborgir: 24 km – approx. 20 minutes.
As the newest geothermal spa in the region (opened in August 2025), Laugarás Lagoon is a must-visit for those who want a modern, high-end experience without the crowds of larger lagoons. It is the first of its kind in Iceland to feature a two-tiered design connected by a cascading waterfall.
The upper lagoon offers panoramic views of the Hvítá River, while the lower level features a secluded grotto for extra privacy. There are also forest-view saunas, a cold plunge pool filled with glacial water, and even two swim up bars
The Secret Lagoon (Gamla Laugin)
Distance from Hótel Grímsborgir: 34 km – approx. 35 minutes.
If you prefer a more rustic and historic vibe, the Secret Lagoon is the oldest man-made swimming pool in Iceland, dating back to 1891. It maintains a constant, comfortable temperature of 38–40°C and feels like a hidden sanctuary.
The pool is surrounded by small bubbling hot springs and a mini-geyser called Litli Geysir, which erupts every few minutes. The steam rising from the ground creates a magical, misty atmosphere, especially during the winter months.

Reykjadalur
Distance from Hótel Grímsborgir: 24 km – approx. 25 minutes.
If you want a bit of adventure before your soak, Reykjadalur ("Smoky Valley") is the answer. It’s not a built spa, but a natural river where hot springs meet cold mountain water.
After a 45-minute uphill hike through a steaming volcanic valley, you reach a boardwalk along the river. You can move up or down the stream to find your perfect temperature.
There are no lockers or showers here, just simple wooden partitions so bring a towel and a waterproof bag for your clothes!
