Reynisfjara: Where Nature's Power Meets Beauty

Nature in Iceland often reminds us that it is both breathtaking and powerful. One of the places where this balance is most visible is Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach on Iceland’s South Coast.
With its striking volcanic shoreline and towering basalt columns, Reynisfjara is a place that feels magical and magnificent.

Location

Reynisfjara is located just outside the village of Vík í Mýrdal, about a 2.5–3 hour drive from Reykjavík along the Ring Road.

It’s one of the most visited places amongst travellers and is only a short distance from Hotel Katla, making it an easy excursion for our guests.

Origin

The black sands of Reynisfjara are the result of volcanic activity, where lava from ancient eruptions cooled quickly, broke apart, and was ground down by the relentless and powerful waves of the North Atlantic ocean.
Alongside the beach stand large basalt columns, formed by lava cooling slowly into geometric shapes, and offshore you will see the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
According to Icelandic folklore, these rock pillars were once trolls who were turned to stone by the rising sun.

Ocean shore in Iceland called Reynisfjara

A place of beauty and danger

While Reynisfjara is one of Iceland’s most stunning natural landmarks, it is also one of the most dangerous.
The same natural forces that shaped this beach continue to show their power today. Sneaker waves are very sudden and powerful those waves race far higher up the sand than most expect. Even the most experienced travellers can be caught off guard.
The currents here are extremely strong, and the water is icy cold all year round.

Sadly, many lives have been lost at Reynisfjara over the last years due to accidents, including as recent as 2025.
These tragedies serve as reminders to all, that the ocean demands respect and caution.

Staying safe

When visiting Reynisfjara, keep these safety guidelines in mind:

Stay well back from the waterline. Even if the sea looks calm, waves can surge suddenly.
Never turn your back on the ocean. Many accidents happen when people are distracted by photos.
Watch your children closely. Hold hands and keep them at a safe distance from the ocean at all times.
Pay attention to warning signs and the beach’s traffic-light system, that is very important if the warning signs are followed you will be safe and able to enjoy natures beauty. If the light is yellow, be extra careful. If it is red, do not enter the beach.
Avoid standing directly under the cliffs. Rockfalls are possible, especially in wet weather.

Treat nature with caution and respect

Despite its dangers, Reynisfjara remains one of Iceland’s most unforgettable sights.
Parking and other facilities are available near the beach, the whole area can be enjoyed all year round.
For more panoramic views of the coastline and the Reynisdrangar stacks, head up to nearby Dyrhólaey, or admire the sea stacks with a safe distance from the black sand beach in Vík.
